The Betty Brinn Children's Museum is dedicated to providing interactive exhibits and educational resources that promote the healthy development of children in their formative years—from birth through age ten. The Museum experience encourages hands-on learning and the development of fundamental skills, self-esteem, and the ability to work with others. Caregivers use the Museum as a resource that provides information on early childhood brain development, learning styles, and effective parenting skills. The Lowell Damon House, completed in 1847, is Wauwatosa, Wisconsin's oldest home and a classic example of colonial architecture. The rear five rooms were built in 1844 for Oliver Damon, who migrated to the Wisconsin Territoy from New Hampshire. In 1846, Oliver's son Lowell constructed the handsome front of the home. Guided tours for groups are available by appointment.

Located in the historic Second Ward Savings Bank (built in 1913), the Milwaukee County Historical Society provides visitors with a glimpse at unique architecture and rotating exhibitions. The exhibits explore Milwaukee County's past, the achievemtns of its people and the community's ties to the state and nation.

In addition, the Historical Society regularly hosts nationally acclaimed traveling exhibitions from such organizations as the Gilder Lehrman Institute and the Smithsonian Institution.

The Historical Society also boasts an extensive research library, which houses naturalization papers and government records, photographs, maps, letters, personal documents and diaries.

Designed by prominent Milwaukee architect Alexander Eschweiler for Charles Allis, the first president of Allis Chalmers, and his wife Sarah in 1911, this unique Tudor-style mansion and art collection was built with the sole purpose of bequeathing it to the public to delight, educate and inspire. The permanent collection features 19th Century French and American Paintings, Chinese and Japanese porcelains, Renaissance bronzes, Japanese netsuke, and original antique furnishings.

Kilbourntown House

Kilbourntown House was built in 1844 by Benjamin Church, a carpenter from New York. Church, his wife and 6 children lived in the house, which was originally located in the section of Milwaukee known as Kilbourntown. An excellent example of Greek Revival architecture, the house was saved from destruction in 1938 when it was moved to Estabrook Park and restored as a WPA project. The home contains an outstanding collection of mid-nineteenth century furniture and decorative arts. The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is available for tour by school groups.

The year 2010 will offer visitors dynamic special exhibits and activities for kids and adults. Our summer exhibit, “Adventure Dinosaur!” will feature a prehistoric park, with more than 25 dinosaurs – lurking, moving and rumbling in their tropical outdoor habitat. The exhibit runs May 29 – September 6, and is $2.50 per person after regular Zoo admission.

Overlooking Lake Michigan, the Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum was designed and built in the style of an Italian Renaissance villa by architect David Adler in 1923. The building was originally the residence of former A.O. Smith president, Lloyd Smith, and his family. The museum features fine and decorative arts dating from the 15th through the 18th centuries, wrought-iron masterpieces by Cyril Colnik, the Renaissance Garden, and changing exhibitions.

The 2025 AASLH Annual Conference, in partnership with Ohio Local History Alliance, will take place as the history field makes the final preparations to kickoff off the 250th commemoration of the founding of the United States.

The 2025 conference theme, inspired by AASLH’s Making History at 250: The Field Guide for Semiquincentennial, is an opportunity to broadly explore one of the guide’s themes, The American Experiment. For many in the American colonies in 1776, independence from Britain represented a “leap into the dark” into an unknown future
