Using the resources of the museum, our mission is to educate Delaware Valley students and adults, personalizing the Holocaust so that they learn the consequences of racism, ethnic cleansing, and intolerance. The Holocaust was a watershed event, not only in the 20th century, but in the entire history of humanity. The study of the Holocaust provides us with one of the most effective ways to work with students to examine basic moral issues and value systems. What are the lessons of the Holocaust for us today?

The Rostraver Township Historical Society is dedicated to the preservation of history, artifacts, historic buildings, and, with a primary interest in bringing public awareness to the importance of this mission, emphasizing the uniqueness of the area. The RTHS meets at the Historic Fells Methodist Church, the first Methodist Church to locate in Rostraver Township. Concord School, a one room subscription school built in 1830, is open every Sunday by the RTHS, Memorial Day through Labor Day, plus special event days. The Historical Society welcomes any genealogical inquiries regarding Rostraver Township.

Slifer House Museum

The Slifer House opened to the public as a Museum in 1976. Since that time the house has been furnished with appropriate decorative arts from the Victorian Era. Many family artifacts have been returned to the house from descendants and friends of the Slifer and Ross families.

The vision of Frank Gilyard, Sr., a local historian is the impetus behind the Central Pennsylvania African American Museum. For over 30 years, Frank has collected and catalogued the art, documents, court records and books which focuses on local African American history in the Reading and Berks County area. It has long been a dream of Mr. Gilyard to establish an African American Museum in the city of Reading. His collection is a journey through the last 177 years and a critical, but undiscovered chapter in our community's development.
