Welcome to the South Dakota State Historical Society. Created by the Legislature in 1901, the Society has been the keeper of state’s history ever since. Today we operate five program areas—archaeology, archives, historic preservation, museum, and research and publishing. Welcome to Lake Preston, South Dakota, strategically located on US Hwy 14 with unit train access to the DM&E Railroad. Nestled between Lake Thompson, Lake Henry, Lake Whitewood and Lake Preston, the area is paradise for hunters and fishermen. Over fifty businesses including a high-tech tool and die manufacturer call Lake Preston home, with agriculture supporting much of the economy with a full service agronomy center and elevator. Outside of the area, Lake Preston is best know for the first large outdoor swimming pool and our unusual school mascot “The Divers.”

Fort Meade was an active military fort from 1878 to 1944. Today it is active in Officer Training Schools. They perserve the history in and to the Black Hills of South Dakota. The museum displays many remnants of the historic peacekeeping old post and faithfully preserves them. There are numerous mementos of the colorful units and the troopers who served at the Fort Meade Museum.
