The first federally funded lighthouse, was built to guide maritime commerce at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. It is standing near the “First Landing” site where English settlers arrived in 1607. It has stood sentinel since it was completed in 1792. Authorized by George Washington and overseen by Alexander Hamilton. Designed by New York architect John McComb. In active use for nearly a century before being replaced by a new cast iron lighthouse still standing nearby. It is one of the oldest surviving lighthouses in the United States.

The museum unfolds transportation from 1725 to 1941. Collections include the oldest carriage on display, a Portuguese Nobility Carriage, and one of the oldest cars on display in America, an 1892 Mercedes-Benz. Part of Luray Caverns.

The Collingwood Library and Museum on Americanism (CLMA) occupies 8.75 acres of land on the banks of the Potomac River, midway between Alexandria and Mount Vernon on what was once part of George Washington's River Farm. Collingwood is owned by a non-profit corporation chartered by the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1976.Collingwood is a non-profit foundation dedicated to our American Heritage and those who cherish the freedom of life, liberty, religion and free expression.
