Tour the site where Joseph Glidden invented and first manufactured the most widely used type of barbed wire. View demonstrations of the blacksmith craft in the Phineas Vaughan Blacksmith Shop. Both the 1861 home and brick barn are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Jacksonville Area Genealogical and Historical Society was organized in 1972 and incorporated in 1976 as a non-profit organization to collect data of a genealogical and historical nature. Most of our records cover Morgan County, Illinois and other nearby counties such as Cass, Scott, Sangamon, Menard, Macoupin, Greene, Adams, Brown, Schuyler and Pike. We also have some miscellaneous material on states, mainly Virginia and Kentucky.

Our three-acre site of the Jersey County Historical Society includes the historic Cheney Mansion, Lone Star School, McAdams Log Cabin and Union Forest Church and our genealogy research center.
