The purpose of the Society is to collect, display, store, and preserve artifacts, information, and documents concerning our local history and to use our resources to provide educational services to our community and the public at large.

The museum was completed in 1980 with funds contributed by Elizabeth Smith in memory of her father George A. Smith and her grandfather, Samuel Abbot Smith. The museum houses exhibits and the Society's collection of artifacts, manuscripts, and other Arlington memorabilia. The Smith Museum is handicapped accessible.

Private Thomas Larabee, according to Dover tradition, helped row General George Washington across the Delaware River, at Trenton, New Jersey, on December 26, 1776. His powder horn and numerous artifacts from an archaeological dig on his property in the 1970's are on display at the Sawin Museum.
